Elysia and Oxynoe
We carry a few different Elysia and Oxynoe species under this item description. They are all small sacoglossan slugs that will grow to one inch maximum. The Oxynoe species are reported to be obligate Caulerpa feeders in scientific literature but we feed them Ulva , Entereomorpha and hair algae here. The Elysia species will eat nearly any fleshy green algae. These species are small, they reach about an adult size of inch long but are only 4mm wide at that size, and 3mm tall at their highest point.
These are not cost effective cleaners, and may require some special care from you. They are hardy in aquariums with strainers on their intakes and pumps without exposed powerheads but can get caught in pumps and that is something to be aware of. These species appear to be short lived. We think they live only a year in total, we will try our best to send sub adults to give you the longest possible time with these species. They are non toxic, and not related to nudibranchs.
We carry them more as a curiosity, they make great subjects for macro photography and they are just "weird". Sarcoglossans suck the chlorophyll out of algae and use it to achieve their attractive green color, and some species are able to use the chlorophyll to create sugar from solar energy just like plants do. This process is called kleptoplasty, isn't that funny? I thought so.
These guys are small.
